Why do cats eat grass?

Even though cats are meat eaters ... there are times when domestic cats seem to crave some greens. Their cousins in the wild consume greens and roughage, when they eat the stomach contents of their prey.

Cat grass provides fiber and helps prevent hairballs

Cat grass can help remove undigested hair from your cat's digestive system, either end.

Eating grass or greens (including catnip) can also cause your cat to regurgitate (or throw up) the undigested contents of his stomach, such as cat hair.

A bit messy perhaps ... but so are discarded hairballs.

Both indoor cats and outdoor cats benefit from an offering of organic cat grass

Outdoor cats have plenty of opportunity to nibble on grass. On the down side, velvety green grass in your neighborhood may have been treated with weed killers, pesticides and other harmful substances.

And cats can be attracted to indoor plants, some of which might be poisonous.

Some pet stores offer affordable containers of growing cat grass

I find these containers of grass last about ten days or so.

I water them once, when I bring them home. After that I can leave it for about five days or so. Cat grass does not like lots of water. By then, it is root bound. I water the grass by putting the container in a bowl of water and let the roots suck up the water. If you over water, the grass will begin to smell musty.

My cats love it, love it and so does my daughter's dog.

Easily done, grow your own cat grass

You can purchase seed packs at pet stores and gardening centers. Common cat grass seeds are wheat, oats and rye. Organic soil is preferable. Choose a planter that is quite heavy and won't tip ... or put a plastic container of grass inside a heavier container.

Chia Cat Grass Planter

This fun grass kit contains a blend of wheat grass and oat grass seeds, soil and an attractive planter. Within a few days the grass is ready to eat ... a healthy snack for "cats, dogs, birds and other pets."

Whether your cat’s craving for cat grass stems from a genuine need of greens ... or for a little assistance with bathroom duties ... it’s a healthy treat.
