If you have ever wondered how old your cat is ...

compared to our human years, a cat age chart will give you a pretty good idea ... it is based on averages only and is not exact by any means.

Kitten Age

Your kitten does a lot of growing up during its first year.

At one year of age your kitten has grown into the equivalent of a 15 year old teenager, physically able to be a parent, but lacking the maturity of an adult cat.

How long do cats live?

In a cat's second year it ages by nine people years and enters adulthood. At age three, the aging process slows down ... and for one of our years, a cat ages four.

At about the age of seven, middle age ends and the senior years begin. At age 14 your cat hobbles on into the geriatric (very old) stage.

How you can help your cat live a longer life

Heredity and breed will influence the life span of cats, but you can add years and quality to your cat's life by providing:

... the best diet you can afford and proper medical care.

You should know that unlike pet dogs (and some of us) cats usually don't make a fuss or show any signs of being sick.

Cats in the wild will hide symptoms of illness or injury because they don't want to attract the attention of predators. Your domestic cat acts the same way and could be feeling absolutely awful ... and appear perfectly normal to you.

... Cats that are allowed outdoors are exposed to traffic, disease, parasites and unkind people.

Indoor cats, perhaps lead less exciting lives, but they are more likely to live into their senior years ... and avoid a lot more trips to the vet.

When birthdays come why not have a party?

It can be an easy small family affair or an all out cat themed party.

Always a good idea ... whether a birthday party for kids or your pet ... add an act of kindness

For my daughters' birthday parties I didn't always give the kids the usual goody bags but instead bought a bag of pet food to give to our local animal shelter. The younger ones drew pictures for the animals, which I taped to the bag. The older ones simply signed it.

They were all totally okay with it and all helped feed some shelter animals.
